On Saturday 22nd June we have invited Figgures Cycles to run a DROP IN afternoon. Bring along your bike (children and adults) for a FREE safety check.

Drop In anytime between 2pm - 4.30pm, so dig out your bike, and bring it along!

Along side this event we will also be running a Workshop where you can learn to do your own safety check and basic bike maintenance. See below.

Learn how to do your own Bike Maintenance

On Saturday 22nd June, we have invited Ron Hawker - the Lymington Triathlon Bike expert - to run a bike workshop.

The workshop will take place from 2 - 4.30pm at 9th Lymington Scout Hut, King Saltern Road, behind the Haven, SO41 3QD

The workshop is open to teenagers and adults and the are a limited number of spaces. To book your place, please email Kate on lymington@newforesttransition.org The cost will be via a donation to the cost of the venue hire (£4-5 ish). BYO bike along.

Along side this event we will also be running a drop in session for a Free bike check and bike security coding by the local police. More information to come...

New Forest Spring Fair - Sunday 5th May - New Park - Food Challenge are having a stall, making paper pots, planting seeds, writing fruit poems. Help needed all day, but please volunteer for a couple of hours: 10 -1pm, 12.30 - 3.30 pm or 2.30 - 5.30 pm. Email Sarah if you can help events @ newforesttransition .org Emily to drop some Garden Share leaflets with Sarah.

Transition Lymington our proud to announce the date of their second

JEAN GENIE event

After a very productive and relaxed morning at the beginning of February, we have booked lymington Community Centre for again to run a very similar event, with lots of the same, and loads more ideas of what you can make with your old pair of jeans...

At the end of the last event, many went away with their own bag, or a string of bunting and even a baby owl!

In April, we have lots of new ideas, including making decorations and toys.

There was lots of discussion last night, and lots of planning for our future events.

Jean Genie - Sat 9th Feb - What a great event! We had lots of positive feedback and the whole morning had a lovely feel about it. It pretty much paid for itself (without the Lym Times adverts). Would be great to repeat it fairly soon - Emily to look at dates in April. Remember - PAT testing.

Lymington Allotments - Are working GREAT! Lots of people have been down there, a real little community. Some sites are already planted, others have not been started. There is an Allotment Community Planting day soon, and there is an information board for food swaps.

Garden Share - Emily and Rachel to go through the garden list to see which ones are still available. Next meeting - ideas to let poeple know about the gardens. All gardens can be found at http://www.lymingtongardenshare.org

Greener Christmas Fair - Shall we do this again in 2013? The decision was to have a few less stalls - and make sure the ones that we do have, have local and handmade products. Could use the side room for some craft activities - eg wreath making and felt tree decorations.

Bike Maintenance Day? - Lots of ideas for this? In National Bike Week? 15-23rd June. See if we could get some STF funding? Pay for some bike maintenance guys and some consumables - oil, brake pads, inner tubes etc.. HCC road safety stall. Police - security marking? Decorate a bike stall - denim bunting. Giveaways - wobbly arms, wobbly flags. Sustrans. Map of forest cycle trails. Vision of sustainable transport in the future. Venue? Behind Figures? Recreation centre? Town Hall CP? Woodside Park when another event is happening? RNLI 10k run. Sarah to email Andy re: STF poss.

Royden Woods Sun 9th June - We could do some kids crafts with willow, elder, leaf/flag prints etc.. and advertise our bike event? Speak to Grace.

Jean Genie - What did you make?

Old jeans were given a new lease of life at Transition Lymington’s recent Jeans Genie event. Around forty people came along to the Lymington Community Association on a rainy Saturday morning to find out how to turn old jeans into new and creative items such as bags, doorstops, purses and bunting.

Help, inspiration and sewing machine skills were on hand from experienced sewers to help children and adults alike to create their denim masterpieces and by the end of the morning the pile of old jeans had shrunk and a range of beautiful pieces had been carefully created.

This free session was the first of this type of event to be run by Transition Lymington and the feedback was so positive that similar crafting sessions are planned for later this year.

Many thanks for the Jean Genie event yesterday, I really enjoyed it & came away inspired. Great way to spend a wet weekend...reminds me of my childhood, when I loved doing crafty stuff on wet days. Great idea

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to you and the Transition team for organising such a great event. It was inspirational and really fun! I never thought I'd ever try a sewing machine out again (bad experience at school!!) but a lovely lady (stupidly didn't ask her name!) was so kind and helpful, I may even end up trying to get one!!! It was such a brilliant idea, well done! Looking forward to the next one!

Totally Locally - Lymington

Lymington Shop Keepers are just about to launch - Totally Locally - in Lymington High Street.

They are having their first meeting at the Angel Inn on Monday next week - 4th Feb in the evening at 6pm.

Everybody is welcome, especially independant shops and markets stalls. But you are welcome to go along, just to find out what is happening and offer your support.

Totally locally started in Yorkshire and has been rolled out nationally for other towns to take up, so we can learn by their mistakes, but also strengthen the message … see

Christmas Fair - Sat 1st Dec - 9-12 noon. Lots of help needed from 7.30am. Newspaper adverts are in. School leaflets have been distributed. Emily to arrange a rota, items such as A frames and garden greenery needed. Jean genie examples needed too.

Jean Genie - Sat 9th Feb - What can you do with an old pair of jeans? Lym Comm Centre 10am - 12.30pm. To advertise at the Christmas Fair and local press nearer the time.

Lymington Allotments - NOW up and running with great enthusiasm and friendly rivalry!

Garden Share - There are still some gardens that do not have gardeners. All gardens can be found athttp://www.lymingtongardenshare.org

Mapping Projects - with OS ongoing.

Wild Flowers - Kate explained that just sewing seeds without proper preparation is unsatisfactory. Seeds are expensive and yields will be poor.

Priestlands Walled Garden - No real solution to this. It was felt that the school uses the garden to promote itself and would benefit from setting up a management plan to work out what is going to happen.

Lymington Veg Shop - Angel Courtyard - Natasha (the jam lady) has taken over the fruit shop. She is keen to stock local produce and anyone's garden surplus. Help support this local independent business.

School Energy Project - This is a great NFT initiative, part-funded by the NPA's Sustainable development Fund. The group felt that we need to advertise this further - it would give us greater credibility with a wider cross-section of the community.

There was lots of discussion last night, and lots of planning for our future events.

Green Open Doors - last weekend - this was felt to be a very positive event, with nearly double the number of visitors from the 200 last year. Fiona's mill had 35 visitors over the two days. Richards B&B had 6 visitors over three hours. Fiona said overall is was very 'heartening.'

Christmas Fair - Sat 1st Dec - 9-12 noon. All 17 have now been booked. June and Arthur have kindly offered to run the tea and coffee stand. Stalls to set up the night before - Emily to look into the Lymington Lights - possible road closure on Fri 30th Nov? Sarah to look at the posters/school leaflets, Lymington Times and events websites. Andy has offered to print the leaflets.

Jean Genie - Sat 9th Feb - What can you do with an old pair of jeans? Lym Comm Centre 10am - 12.30pm. There has a good response from people interested in bringing along their sewing machine to help. Emily to speak to some of the local charity shops for old jeans, Sarah to produce a leaflet - so that it can go out at the Christmas Fair.

Lymington Allotments - NOW AVAILABLE - to anyone who was on the waiting list and wanted one at that location. There are 68 plots, keys are available to pick up, the site has been ploughed, water is available on site, planning permission applied for for one design of shed. Gary said that he was looking forward to being part of a thriving community down there. Apparently some people on the waiting list have been on the list for in excess of 15 yrs! So amazing stuff! Well done to everyone involved.

Garden Share - There are 12 gardens available and 5 gardens that are matched. All gardens can be found at http://www.lymingtongardenshare.org Emily and Rachel have just completed a survey from CAT by a MSc student on Garden shares.

Mapping Projects - There were continued discussions on the potential mapping projects for Lymington, including a foraging map. Also, the Food Challenge have an idea for local food trails by bike, on foot and would like to take this further over the winter, so that they might be available from Easter 2013.

Wild Flowers - It was reported that the TC 's request for funding for more wild flower planting at Woodside Park had been rejected. Sally is meeting with the Land Advice Service at another potential area for planting/seeding.

Priestlands Walled Garden - Kit is giving up looking after the garden full time. The group felt that they would like to be involved somehow in the garden in the future, they also felt that it was important for the students to continue to be involved in some way too.

Six of us met up this evening at the Thomas Tripp to discuss what has been happening recently and our forthcoming events for the rest of the year, and for early 2013.

WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING?

Lymington Allotments - Deneside Copse - The council are still committed to this, and there will be enough plots for everyone who would like one on the waiting list. There has been some repeated vandalism on the site, which has caused some delays.

Garden Share - 12 vacant gardens. Discussed ideas about how to advertise this? Landshare? Food challenge website?

Mapping - OS are able to help us with some maps of the town for: local food, garden share locations and available land for growing. They might also be able to help the Food challenge Food Trail idea.

Wild flower seeds for bees and butterflies. Apparently the town council are applying for funding for some more wild flower planting in Woodside Gardens. Transition groups around the country are able to order 'seed balls' at discount prices. See website
