Hi all,

Just a quick plea for anyone with bulging bottom drawers (no pun intended) overflowing sewing baskets and who can't throw away an item of clothing, just because it has a hole/stain on it.... WE NEED YOU...

We are planning a Jean Genie Morning - Saturday 9th February, and encouraging people to come along and make something out of their old pair of jeans - anything they want, a cushion, draught excluder, bag, bunting, door stop, table mat.... you name it, we'll try and help you make it..

Anyway, what we are really looking for is all those bits of ribbon, odd buttons, beads etc.. that you probably won't be able to find a use for, but don't want to throw away either.. so here's the list, and if you are in the SO41 area and can drop it off, or would like one of us to pick it up, let me know.

cotton threads, chalk, embroidery threads, old mens ties (can be read either way!) felt, ribbon pieces, buttons, beads, calico, jeans, shirts, fabric tape, stuffing - old socks washed and cut up, old pillows washed and taken apart, picture frames etc…

Christmas tree drop-off points

If you have a real tree this Christmas, you can drop it off at one of our sites in January and we will chip it and use it as mulch.

Brookley Road car park, Brockenhurst
A338 slip road car park, Fordingbridge
New Road car park, Hythe
St Thomas Street car park, Lymington
Village centre car park, Lyndhurst
Crossmead Avenue car park, New Milton
The Furlong car park, Ringwood
Westfield car park, Totton

Sites will be open to the public from Wednesday 2 January to Sunday 13 January. The drop-off area will be clearly marked with a yellow road sign, please only put your Christmas trees in this area.

Your Christmas tree can also be taken to one of the household waste recycling centres, located at Efford, Marchwood and Somerley.

If you are unable to take your tree to a drop-off point or household waste recycling centre, you can put it out with your rubbish if it is less than 6ft tall. We will be unable to chip or compost these trees.

Bag levy in Northern Ireland set to be introduced in April 2013.

With an initial 5p duty, set to rise to 10p in 2014.

Sadly, there has been no commitment from the coalition in Westminster, although the Scottish Government has indicated that it is planning a consultation on the issue.

Food Waste, Small Electrical Equipment and Aerosols - Now being collected in Christchurch

Christchurch Borough are improving their household waste collection and recycling system. They are adding the collection of food waste (thought to make up about one third of Dorset's refuse) and more items for recycling too. more...

They are also increasing the number of items that can be placed in recycling banks at certain supermarkets. Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) including kettles, toasters, mobile phones, laptops, lamps, electric tools and entertainments - anything that needs electricity to work. Banks are located in Christchurch at the bypass car park (next to Waitrose) and Wortley Road car park in Highcliffe. more....

Finally, Dorset local authorities are celebrating winning the National Can Do Award, for the best aerosol recycling campaign. The campaign highlighted that empty deodorant, hair spray, air freshener and furniture polish aerosols can all be recycled as part of the residents' kerbside collections. more...

Christmas trees less than 1.8m / 6ft tall may be put out for collection with your refuse, but will not be recycled.

New Year's Resolution - Buy Nothing New in 2012

A while ago a friend of mine undertook to not buy anything new for a year. It seemed, at the time, to be a major challenge and I just looked on in admiration. Now that it's coming up to the traditional time for making new year resolutions I'm thinking this would be a very good idea for 2012.

It would:

challenge the consumerist culture we are all trapped in
explore what we all take for granted
offer an alternative to just throwing stuff away and buying a replacement
support recycling and re-use initiatives
save money

There would need to be some 'rules'. Clearly food has to be excluded and maybe some items of personal and domestic hygiene? But beyond that there are plenty of second hand and recycled options aren't there...........

I'm up for it. Is anyone else? Let me know if you are - there is strength in numbers! C'mon...let's do it!

Talk about Waste and Recycling brings possible way to work together

Last night about 25 people gathered in the Lymington Community Centre to hear Debs from the District Council, talk about our waste, how its collected, sorted and dealt with. The hampshire authorities certainly have a lot of waste to deal with!

There were lots of questions at the end of the talk, and one idea that came up was that we could help reduce the amount we produce by reducing the number of plastic bags that supermarkets give out and we throw away. To have some kind of Plastic Bag Free Week in a couple of towns in the forest (Lymington, New Milton and Ringwood were mentioned, but we'd love you to be involved where you live too?)

The talk was attended by a number of local Transition groups, the New Forest Friends of the Earth, Ringwood School and more besides. If we all worked together, and had the support of the District Council, perhaps we could come up with some awareness raising and habit changing activities?

If you have any ideas, good websites, possible activities for young children and young people, to do with getting rid of one-use plastic bags, please leave a comment below, and if you fancy being part of some kind of event(s) next year please email me your contact details and I will get in touch.
