The Brockenhurst transitipon group will be digging in the community garden in St Saviour's church on 6th November from 11 am until around 12.30. All are welcome even if you can only join us for part of the time. We'll provide tools.

We will be re-arranging the beds from two to four beds, to allow crop rotation, and dig over the bed ready for the winter.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Patrick

for Brockenhurst Transition group

Tel: 01590 623052

We tend to meet in the Rose and Crown pub once a month on a Wednesday or Thursday evening. This year we are holding some public meetings too in the village hall.

Please contact Patrick (patrick@patrickandrews.co.uk) to find out when the next meeting will take place.

Our main focus at the moment is the community garden which is in the church grounds. We're also organising a local cycling day as part of the New Forest cycle-in on 27th June.

Here is the description of our purpose which was recently agreed by the members of the group:

Aims
The Brockenhurst transition process will enable the village to work towards creating a community sharing locally produced food and goods and powered by local energy, so contributing to a positive global environment. We will connect and share our vision with like minded groups across the New Forest and the many visitors it attracts, and with the wider world.

Our Vision is of a world

· Of strong diverse communities, working together in a greener, healthier, more rewarding, more caring, and more peaceful world.
· Where people are encouraged and empowered to pursue local solutions to local issues
· Where we all live a sustainable life style that offers just and equitable uses of natural resources, for all people, protecting the vulnerable and poor of the developing world.
· Where we take seriously the problems that face our planet and respond to them with hope and action

Our Role

Is to inform, inspire, create, facilitate, support, unite, enable and encourage.

We had another successful meeting on Friday 8th May. The discussions were wide ranging and included: the need for a mission statement to let people know what we are about, transport and in particular, cycle routes through the village, bio-digesters, our presence at the church summer celebration and the progress of the community garden. It was felt that the Brockenhurst Transition group should be more than just a 'talking shop' and certainly not a lobbying group but that we should take positive actions.

Next meeting: 12:00 Friday June 5th. All welcome.

The community garden has now been planted with potatoes, carrots, broccoli, beans, courgettes, marrows and radishes. It has been agreed that the group will meet very other saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Next Community garden: 10 a.m. Saturday 15th May. All welcome.

Church Summer Celebration: 2 p.m. Saturday 13th June. Come and say hallo!

We now have two large beds dug, stones removed, large quantities of manure added (thanks to Neil Hill for collecting this) and potatoes planted. We're meeting again in a couple of weeks time (Saturday 2nd May) at 10.00 am to plant some more veg. You're very welcome to come and watch or even help!

In addition to the ideas listed in the post below, the Brockenhurst Transition meeting on the 8th November generated lots of ideas. Many of these are just tentative at the moment and would require further exploration but I was asked to put them up on this site for all to see.........
Continue reading "Ideas from the Brockenhurst Transition Group Meeting"

More than 25 people gathered at the Cottage Lodge Hotel on 8 November to consider how to pursue a local Transition initiative.

After hearing about what was behind Transition, and why there were already a number of people working on issues, the group discussed ideas for action. Amongst a variety of suggestions the following were put forward:

the Allotment Group working more closely with local schools to teach children about growing fruit and veg, and

an idea from a local grower to recycle domestic cooking oil into bio-diesel to power tractors and plant.

If you'd like more information or would like to get involved email Brockenhurst Transition
