New Big Society fund is launched

A new financial institution set up by the government to finance charities and community groups is launched with £600m in funds.

Big Society Capital has £600m, of which the majority comes from unused cash in bank accounts that had been dormant for more than 15 years.

The fund will back social enterprises that prove they can repay an investment through the income they generate.

"This is about supplying capital to help society expand," said Prime Minister David Cameron.

This garden has been matched for this year.

A wonderfully well tended vegetable patch has become available in Pilley, it has been well composted and dug over this winter. Dimensions are 6m by 3m and it has a sunny aspect. Outside water is available, tool storage and there is the possibility to use one side of a greenhouse. We do not have pictures at this time, but hope to get some soon.

A large garden 30m long by 15m wide has become available in May Avenue Lymington. It is currently under brambles and nettles so will need some preparatory work! The garden is partially shaded. There is outside water available and somewhere to store tools. The owner would also be happy to have a beehive in the garden.

GARDEN AVAILABLE IN MILFORD-ON-SEA A great opportunity for a keen gardener - two large (approx. 11.5m by 2m) raised beds are available along with two greenhouses, one large (5m by 2.5m) and the second smaller. One raised bed has been covered in black plastic and could quickly be bought back into cultivation, the other will need weeding. There is also a small herb bed in this sunny garden. Water is available from a tap and there are compost bins nearby.

GARDEN AVAILABLE IN HAGLANE COPSE. A lovely sunny vegetable patch and greenhouse are ready to be taken on. The garden was cultivated last year so with a bit of weeding it would be ready to plant very quickly. The plot is approximately 5 metres 80 cm by 5metres, which includes the greenhouse. Water is available from nearby water butts and compost bins have some compost ready. There is storage for tools if it is required.

FiTs to be reduced again in July

Just as the UK's solar industry is recovering from recent cuts to the Feed in Tariff they are due to be slashed again. In July tariffs for <4kW installtions will drop from the recently reduced rate of 21p to as low as 13.6p - a further 35% reduction. This new rate is being set according to levels of Solar PV deployment during March and April.

Any while even the most hardened environmentalists will concede that the initial tariff of 42p was unsustainable in the face of underestimated demand for solar, are these rushed and repeated cuts not killing off a flourishing industry? Or do you think that these are the only tactics to deal with what was developing into a serious problem?

On Tuesday 5 June, we will be holding a Picnic from 12 noon on Hyde Common (Village Hall if wet).

Bring your own picnic and everything. There will be games and activities, kite flying, rounders etc. Make and wear your own crown (from re-cycled materials, please) There will be live music and New Forest Ice Cream (free to crown wearers)

The British Beekeepers Association are setting up a website/service matching landowners with local beekeepers.

The idea is that landowners provide the sites for the hives, which a local beekeeper will look after.

Benefits all rounds.

The landown gets lots of local pollinators, no hassle of the hives and a couple of jars of honey!

The beekeeper gets another site for keeping bees.

Lymington Meetings 2012

Hi and a belated Happy New Year!

After the New Forest Transition AGM at Minstead on Saturday, I thought I’d better get myself organised and get out some proposed dates for meeting up this year. Transition Lymington was well represented at the AGM and a date that most of us could do was Wednesday 25th January, so let’s aim for that as our first meeting of 2012... 8pm at the Thomas Tripp unless anyone would like to suggest a new meeting place? To all those out there on the mailing list, plus people who have expressed an interest in getting involved, please do come along – there are some good projects underway, and plenty of ideas floating around that need people to drive them forward!

Greener Living Show 2012 - Help Wanted

Hi all,

We have two tables booked at the National Park's Greener Living show in a couple of weeks. The show is being at Sandy Balls for the second year and last year proved to be a lively and very family friendly event.

If you are able to come for an hour or two to help on the stand, anytime between 10am -4pm, it would be much appreciated. We will have some a Food Challenge activity, information about the local groups and events ahead, plus information on the energy group too.
